The lesser you make you hard drive work, the longer it lasts. If you are used to leave your computer turned on while doing any other work or go out for long time like 1-2 hours,Then either hibernate your computer or use "power options" for your hard disk drive..
Steps for using power options :
Go to Control pannel
then select " Power options "

ps1
Then a dialog box will be opened. Click on "Change plan settings" .
After that one another window will be opened.
Click on " Change advanced power settings "

ps2
then a dialog box will be opened.
now expand "Hard Disk "
then expand Turn off hard disk after.
Now you can modify the time for turn off the hard disk according your usage .
kindly note that do not use this tip if you are going to use your computer after few minutes e.g.. after 4-5 minutes , because if you will turn "On" and turn " off " your hard disk after few minutes then the frequent starts-stops will reduce your hard disk drive's life .
Better you turn Off computer while going for such a long time.

The hard disk will not take it kindly to being moved here and there while it is working.
If you hear screeching noise from your PC that noise is from the hard disk ,
it may be lead to crash or damage so its the  time for backup of your hard disk .
